Not THAT scam again :O I had this already in my old page, it is a 100% scam made up by some big lobby groups. There is no real truth behind it, and what is worse, I even found out back then, that the organization who started this “dirty dozen” fad is a REAL creepy disguised pseudo-environmentalist big food lobby group (with legal cases chasing them and all). And they even collect “donations” online and give out such “freebies” as this one here :O :(
And here is why this cannot be true, if you just look away for a few seconds from the cutie icons and think logically (and I say all that as a former gardener, but it should be logical to anybody):
1. Fruits and vegetables coming from developing countries ALWAYS brim with pesticides, I can 100% assure you that (only exception of that is of course organic produce). So all the nonsense about non-organic mangoes, papayas, bananas, pineapples and avocados being “safe” is a nonsensical lie. If you do not believe me, then just go to the next supermarket, grab ANY random non-organic mango or banana and RUB the surface a bit with a wet finger. The finger will become all nasty-sticky and smell weird - this does not happen with organic mangoes or bananas (surprise, surprise)
2. ALL fruits and vegetables which have a soft shell or no shell at all contain LOGICALLY more pesticides, compared to those with harder shells, which you can wash well or peel off (here again, the organic produce is the exception). So that talk about non-organic tomatoes or eggplants as being safe is logically also a silly lie. Not to mention that Greenpeace studies have shown again and again that non-organic tomatoes are ESPECIALLY loaded with pesticides.
3. Fruits and vegetables which grow nearby where you live and have a hard shell, husk or peel and/or grow under the earth will ALWAYS contain less pesticides, because long transports require higher “treatments”, and when you get those hard-shelled ones you can simply peel it off or at least wash the shell very well with vinegar and hot water or similar. So here comes another lie - potatoes are pretty safe to eat, no matter if organic or not.
So one can say that about 70% of that list is nonsense, and most likely made up to meet certain food lobby wishes, for consumers to buy certain produce organic and certain non-organic. But in reality it confuses only and let’s people learn useless “knowledge”, while using one’s own brain and normal logical thinking helps much more.
In general, do NEVER trust blindly ANY advice you find online. ALWAYS get a second, third and fourth opinion, from different, unbiased sources. Other way you will end up in the hands of manipulators, who are only out to get your $$$ Confused and scared consumers tend to buy what the companies dictate - if you are cool and relaxed they cannot sell you any crap they want :D
So do not despair, the ONLY “bad” fruits and veggies are those which are from far far away and/or too soft (a hard shell also shields the fruits and vegetables from absorbing too many poisons, also logical, or not?). If you buy you produce locally at a farmers market or similar, and chose ones which grow nearby, you will be well off usually. A simple wisdom, and no phony “cheat sheets” needed.
